Art Car Parade in Houston

After the opening of my Guantanamo Brain exhibition and after putting a Bomb Bird on a roof in the center of Amsterdam. I left for Houston, Texas, where the Dreamyourtopia Borderpatrol car was part of the annual art car parade, with almost 300.000 spectators.

Going into Hibernation

The Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia project went into Hibernation and will emerge later this summer again, appearing at the Lowlands Festival, 21st, 22nd and 23rd of August 2009.

You can already start preparing yourself by downloading the immigration form from http://www.dadara.nl/checkpoint/immigration-forms.htm , filling it out and mailing it to the Department of Dreamland Security. Dutch forms will be available in the future as well :-)

In the meantime check the "Spacecraft 2 More Fleeting Architecture and Hideouts" , which features the Checkpoint alongside many other cool projects. link

For now I'm concentrating on my Upcoming Guantanamo Brain exhibition at Famous in Amsterdam, starting the 2nd of May.

Checkpoint in the Netherlands

Last week the Border Control Checkpoint managed to pass the Dutch Border Control and safely arrived in its container in the Netherlands after its Transatlantic journey.
Apart from a few minor scars and bruised all has survived pretty well and is now waiting in storage for the Lowlands festival end of August.

Back Home in Amsterdam

Our last week in Dallas was pretty hectic, with my talk at the Dallas Museum of Art on the 8th of January, the resurrection of Dreamyourtopia on the 10th at Centraltrak, dismantling the installation the next day, packing the overseas container with the whole project on the 12th, and last but not least packing our seven US months in suitcases and leaving on the 14th.

But all went pretty relaxed. The event on the 10th was a great success, with over 200 "immigrants", who needed to be processed, showing up with their filled out immigration forms and photos in hand. It was a challenge to translate the Dreamyourtopia installation from the surreal desert to the very urban environment of Dallas. But it worked surprisingly well, using the whole building and concentrating more on the theatrical than visual aspects.

Dreamyourtopia in Dallas and Beyond

After almost six months spent here in Dallas ( and in the Nevada desert ) our stay is coming to an end. I already started preparing for the Dreamyourtopia performance at the Lowlands Festival in August 2009 in the Netherlands, rebuilding the interrogation house in a sturdy, movable, better designed and waterproof way. But first the Checkpoint will still operate here in Dallas at Centraltrak on the 10th of January and I'll give a talk about the whole project at the Dallas Museum of Art on the 8th. A few days later everything will be packed in an overseas container and on its way and we'll be in a plane heading for the Amsterdam rain

Dustyourtopia

An extremely dusty last weekend made the Checkpoint appear even more surreal and ghostly.
Luckily the storms laid down, so we could dismantle the Checkpoint, leaving no trace in the process. Ashes to Ashes, Brains to Brains, Dust to Dust.

Another 1800 miles to go and we'll be home.
Once I'll wash all the dust of my brain I'll try to collect my thoughts and experiences and will post those on this blog.

Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia in the desert

The Department of Dreamland Security has finished setting up Headquarters and has already processed hundreds of forms and issuing Passports to the Land of Dreams.

Next Sunday we'll start dismantling and will start getting ready to move back to the real world......

Great weather ( more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but a few weeks Dallas got me used to that ) , no dust storms and a great crew make for good progress on the project, so we might be up and running by Monday as planned.

First days in the desert

The Department of Dreamland Security has arrived in the desert last Sunday, set up camp and has been building and painting really hard. Hot weather, but somehow we're lucky that our spot out in the open doesn't get hit by the dust storms that do frequent a big part of the rest of the Burning Man Area. The Dream Gods must be with us.

Walls are up and being covered with grey paint and by tomorrow the main skull entrance should be ready. Then still the interrogation house, barb wire, CCTV and we'll be ready to start protecting your and our dreams.

And we now have our own bar as well for some after work hour relaxing......

We'll try to keep you all posted again in a few days live from the desert if satellite internet and weather permit!

After a long and hectic working period in Dallas all has been packed and we returned to George Heidweiller's studio in New Mexico after our initial American Dream Odyssey started here as well in April. Surveillance camera system is now operational, combat fatigues ready, car customized, passports being printed, sanding, drilling, hammering and more brain painting of course. More people flying in from Amsterdam. No sleep. No time to dream anymore. But hopefully enough time to make this Dream come true........

Freed of Dust and Heat

I got an extra studio for the past three days in the Central Trak artist residency (thanks Charissa! ), so I could paint and varnish the Brain modules without the heat and (more importantly) the dust. We will have enough of those out in the desert.........

The studio had to be vacated tomorrow morning before the cleaning lady comes, so I put in some really long working hours, but managed to get it done and just varnished the last layer so it can dry overnight.

Dreamyourtopia Border Patrolcar

I am currently working with the people of Skinz on getting my Chevy Caprice stationwagon transformed into a Dreamyourtopia Border Patrol Car, so the Department of Dreamland Security can drive around in the desert and randomly arrest unsuspecting citizens.

Anyone not carrying proper ID's might be arrested and taken into Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia for further interrogation, which might lead to issuing the Passport to the Land of Dreams, thus preventing any future problems.

After all the Department of Dreamland Security is here to protect and to serve!

Brain Painting

I started working on painting the brain structure on the entrance skull parts.
Transported all from the Continental Gin Building to my studio at Central Trak,
and layed the front of the skull out in the parking lot to see all at once and make the different parts fit seamlessly when painted.
But with temperatures above 100 Fahrenheit/ 40 Celsius a parking lot is not the place you want to use for painting. The tarmac to hot to kneel on, the wooden parts to hot to put your hand on and the water you're drinking has already evaporated before entering your body......

So I cleaned up the patio in front of my studio and moved all the parts inside. It's still hot, but at least shaded.

Lots and lots and lots of curvy lines to paint. And the color I'm using doesn't cover in one coat. Some call this kind of work meditative, some call it boring.......

But I'm finally getting almost there. When I finish these 4 panels, I'll have another 12 or so to go.

Work started from the first day we arrived back in Dallas, now a week ago.
Working on the pink "brain" combat fatigues, getting helmets, badges and other Dreamarmy gear, setting up a studio and living space at the Central Trak artist residency, collecting CCTV camera's and other surveillance stuff, picking up my little bar from customs, including a visit to (very appropriate for this project) the Department of Homeland Security, getting wood, paint and other stuff and visiting the printer for getting all the colors and designs right for the Passport to the Land of Dreams etc. etc. etc.

Getting all ready for the big Road Trip adventure starting beginning of next month.

And trying to get used to the Texas heat and the fact that unlike Amsterdam this is not Bike-, but Car-Country.....................

3D Animation

I am working currently with Michael Potts aka Blazing Sun of M2studio
on a 3D animation of the Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia in the desert.
A first rough version of the animation will be presented on the 19th of April at the opening exhibition at Central Trak , but we'll continue working on it to make it a cool short Big Dreamer video!

Central Trak Artist Residency

After driving my Chevy Caprice 700 miles down from Espanola to Dallas, I arrived at the Central Track Artist Residency, meeting various people like Charissa Terranova, Director of the Artist Residency, Brent McMahan of Pathstudio, helping me out with the graphic part of the job, Eric of Shortbusproductions, whose woodshop I may use, various peeps from the Dallas Burner Community (Button, Taboo, SoccerMom, Angi, CapSmashy, Boarhead and many others ) as well as checking out my future studio-loft, and setting up for their "False Space and Time of the Apartment" exhibition, opening on the 19th of April.

New Mexico

I have arrived in New Mexico and started working on the Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia Project,
using George Heidweillers beautiful dome and studio, set against the magnificent backdrop of the high desert mountains.
The logo signs of Dreamyourtopia have been cut out of wood, pages of the Passport have been designed and a bunch of shirts and camouflage gear printed with the logo.
Part of it will be presented at the " False Space and Time of the Apartment " exhibition at the Central Trak Gallery in Dallas on the 19th of April.

Dream Currency the Other Side

Until the Dreamyourtopia Project will become reality in August , most of it will only exist in Cyberspace. The advantage of this virtual reality is that it can reach people all over the Globe. the downside of it all that nothing can be touched, smelt and felt, but it can only be enjoyed in pixelated form.

I completed the backside of my Dream Currency as well now. Before those Dream Notes make their way into the real world, I wanted to share them virtually with you.

The feeling of those painted Dream Bills might get lost though in digital translation.
So I included a few details to give that painted, detailed feeling on your computer screen as well........

Burning Blast from the Past

This new Burning Man Project inspired me to upload a movie I made together with Jesse Limmen in 2004 about my two previous Desert Projects;

a few weeks ago a lot has happened...........

Quite a few people have mailed me offering their support. The Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia Website being one of the results. Big credits to Scotto for that one! People like him and many others make one realize that Utopia may rear its beautiful head not only for one week in a harsh desert environment, but Utopian bits and pieces are shattered all over the Globe. Sometimes they might even be waiting for you around the Corner. Other times you might have to create them yourself, but it's all doable.

First of April I am flying to the US for a first preparatory visit. Visiting friends in New Mexico, with whom I want to work on the Dreamyourtopia project and afterwards driving to Texas to present the Project on the 19th of April at the opening exhibition of Central Track, the Artist Residency of the Dallas University in Texas, where I'll be staying later this year.

Anyone who is interested in helping me with this project can always mail me using the form on the Dreamyourtopia website. At the moment I'm especially looking for a printer to help me with printing the Passport to the Land of your Dreams.

At the same time Thera Hillenaar, costume designer and my girlfriend, is flying to Bali to get the costumes made for the Checkpoint guards and interrogators.

Apart from all the help already offered to me, of course in the real world I'll also need a lot of money to make this Dream come True. So I decided to print my own Dream Currency (see image above).............
